A Mother’s Dance (07/07/2024)

Yesterday was my grandson’s wedding. It was a full day made possible by days, and weeks, and years of preparation. Everything was perfect: the couple, the ceremony, the reception venue. But as I reflect upon all that was, the moments that will stay in my mind the longest are those watching my daughter dance with her son, the groom. That dance was a reflection of all her love and care that brought them to that moment and of all her love and hope and dreams for him for his future. And to make it even better, watching my grandson dance with his mother told me volumes about his recognition of his mother’s powerful love.

The two danced and talked, they danced and smiled, they danced and nodded acknowledgment of the other and all the other had overcome, they danced and laughed. Their dance, I could tell, wasn’t about just that moment. Their dance was about the years that led up to it and about peering into the future with hope. Their dance was a commentary of love lived for all of us watching on. I looked around me at my table, there wasn’t a dry eye to be found. It touched all of us. The moment resonated with each of us.

I was too tired after the events of the day to really reflect upon everything last evening, so this morning was my reflection time. While I thought of all the events, all the special moments in the ceremony, the reception, the interactions among the individuals gathered, it was the mother’s dance upon which I lingered the longest because it reminded me in a most vivid and tangible way of my journey in, with, and through my LORD. And to be quite honest, I often picture my time in prayer, my time in conversation with the LORD, as a dance.

I am where I am because of another. I contributed, but truth be known, I did not do this alone, in fact, I wouldn’t even be without the other, without the LORD. That alone causes me to look upon the LORD with awe, with praise for all the LORD is, with thanksgiving for all the LORD has done for me, with me, in me. The LORD’s love has been the fuel of this journey. The LORD’s love is the music to our dance.

This day, may all of us take time to dance with the LORD, to reflect upon all the love and care that has brought us to this moment and all the love and hope for our future. This day, may we savor what is possible when love is lived and acknowledged.

Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
