LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: John 13:16-20
(After Jesus had washed the feet of the disciples, he said) “Truly, I tell you, the servant is not greater than his master nor is the messenger greater than one who sent him. If you understand these things, blessed are you if you do them.
"I do not speak to all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but that the scripture may be fulfilled, the one that eats bread with me will betray me. Now I tell you this before it comes so that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I Am. Truly, I tell you, that whoever receives the I send receives me and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
In today’s gospel reading, Jesus calls His followers to humble service, imitating Him and his humble serve, most notably, washing the feet of His disciples. Jesus warns his disciples of the betrayal of Judas. Then Jesus identifies himself as I Am, the divine name of God. Jesus ends this text with the apostolic mission of His followers.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
Lord, Almighty Father, You sent your Son to reveal your love for us and your desire for our salvation, for our life in abundance. He came, for love of You and love of us, and He was obedient to You and your will to death, death on a cross for us. He showed us through His life but most especially through His death the meaning of servant. Before His death He called us to be servants, to follow in His footsteps. Send the Spirit to strengthen our resolve to deny ourselves, to pick up our crosses, and to follow Him. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
