Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: August 16,2026

LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Matthew 15:21-28

Then Jesus departed and went to the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. And behold a woman of Canaan came to him saying, “Have mercy on my, O Lord, Son of David. My daughter is grievously possessed with a demon.” But he did not say a word to her in reply. And his disciples came and begged him saying, “Send her away because she keeps crying out to us.”

Jesus answered and said, “I was sent for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

Then she came and paid him homage saying, “Lord, help me.” He answered and said, It is not right to take the children’s bread and cast it to dogs.” But she said, “Truly, Lord, even dogs get to eat of the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith. Let it be done to you as you will.” And her daughter was made whole that very hour.

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

Today’s gospel text recounts Jesus’ encounter with the Canaanite woman of great faith. Her persistence as well as her profound faith in Jesus were the keys to her daughter’s healing at that hour. And we see, in this encounter, Jesus’ opening of the salvation promised the children of Israel to the world, to include the Gentiles.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

LORD, Send your Spirit to strengthen my resolve in living my faith. Grant that I may persistently pray for your guidance and for the grace to discern your will and live it joyfully. Heal my brokenness as only your loving mercy can. Help me to live into the one You created me to be and call me to be. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
