Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: August 17,2026

LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Matthew 19:16-22

A man drew near to Jesus and said, “Good Master, what good things must I do to gain eternal life?” He answered him, “Why do you call me good?” There is only One who is good; that is God. But if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”

He asked him, “Which ones?” And Jesus responded, “You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, honor your father and mother, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

The young man said to him, “All of these I have kept from my youth on. What do I lack still?” Jesus told him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.”

But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful because he had a great number of possessions.

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

Am I settling for not breaking commandments and pretending that is truly following Jesus?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

Today’s gospel recounts Jesus’ conversation with a rich young man in which Jesus spells out the radical call to discipleship which exceeds simple obedience to the commandments.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

LORD, I truly desire to be your disciple, to follow in your footsteps, in the footsteps of my Savior and Lord. Send the Spirit to tenderize me more fully so that I am more able to conform my mind and heart and life to You. Illuminate my mind so that I can recognize the depth of discipleship which clearly exceeds obedience to the law. Grant that my heart may recognize your call to surrender to You not only my woes but also my wishes. Draw me close to You, Lord. Give me courage to be the one You call me to be. Amen.

CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
