Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: August 9,2026

LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a

At Horeb, the mountain of God, Elijah came to a cave and took shelter. Then the LORD told him, “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD for the LORD will be passing by.”

A fierce and heavy wind ripping at the mountains and breaking the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake. But the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering voice. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the face of the cave.

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

LORD, have I missed Your voice because I was waiting for something showy and loud? Have I missed the tiny whispering voice?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

The first reading of today recounts Elijah’s encounter with the LORD’s presence not in loud or destructive or showy forces but rather in a tiny whispering voice.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

LORD, send your Spirit to still my mind and heart so that I might clearly hear You in my day and recognize You in my presence. Amen.

CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
