Date: Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Scripture Text: Luke 1:39-47
Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”
And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior.”
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s gospel reading recounts Mary’s visit with her cousin, Elizabeth, after the annunciation. Elizabeth confirms that Mary is carrying the Lord and calls Mary “blessed” for believing the words spoken to her by Gabriel would be fulfilled.
Meditating on the text with personal questions: Am I trusting the LORD’s words to me in prayer? Do I believe with all my heart?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, You sent Gabriel to the Blessed Virgin Mary to announce to your divine will that she become the mother of your only-begotten Son. Through her faith and the grace and guidance of the Spirit, she believed in You, she embraced your will, and she opened herself to the possibility that seemed impossible. Send your Spirit to stir within me, to strengthen my faith, to open myself to your will and to the possibilities of life through You. Grant that I may open my mind and heart especially to the love of your Son, Jesus, as I prepare to celebrate His birth and commit myself more fully to being His disciple. I ask this in the name of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
