Scripture Text:   Matthew 7:7-12

Jesus said to his disciples: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asked for a loaf of bread, or a snake when he asked for a fish? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him.

“Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.”

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

In today’s gospel reading, Jesus encourages us to rely upon the LORD with persistent prayer, trusting in the LORD’s goodness and love. Jesus further encourages us to shift from self-centeredness to concern for the other, treating one another as we ourselves long to be treated.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

How persistent and trusting am I in my prayer? Do I grow impatient with the LORD? How loving am I of my sisters and brothers? Am I treating them always as I desire to be treated?

Praying:

LORD,  Almighty Father, we lift our voices in praise of You and in thanksgiving for your love of us. We come to You in need, knowing that You will respond as the loving Father of us all that You are. Send your Spirit to guide us in our lives, to strengthen us for our journeys in faith, and to instill in us the wisdom of reliance upon You and your love as promised by You only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
