Scripture Text: Mark 3:31-35
The mother of Jesus and his brothers arrived at the house. Standing outside, they sent word to Jesus and called him. A crowd seated around him told him, "Your mother and your brothers and your sisters are outside asking for you." But he said to them in reply, "Who are my mother and my brothers?" And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The short gospel reading for today recounts Jesus’ response invitation to us to do the will of God as a member of Christ’s family. He is not dishonoring his mother or kin but rather telling us that salvation isn’t automatic with birth but rather that is requires us choosing to do the will of God which we know includes recognizing Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Am I guilty at times of assuming that I am saved because of my membership in a church or my family’s status?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your only begotten Son to dwell among us and to reveal to us your great love for us and Himself as “the way and the truth and the life.” And when the time came for Him to selflessly offer His life for our sins, He did for love of You and love of us. As we strive to follow as His disciples, send the Spirit to illuminate our path and to tenderize our hearts so that we might more perfectly choose to conform ourselves to you will as Jesus taught us. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
