Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: July 17,2026

LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Matthew 12:1-8

Jesus went on the Sabbath through a field, and his disciples who were hungry began to pluck the grain and eat. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to Him, “Why do your disciples do what is unlawful to do on the sabbath day?”

Jesus said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry and how those with him entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for them to eat, neither him nor those with him, but only the priests? Or have you not read in the law how on sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath and are blameless? But I say to you, that in this place one greater than the temple. If you knew what this meant, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not condemn these innocent men. For the Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath.”

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

Do I recognize the LORD’s call to love well takes precedence over any ritual? Do I realize the law’s ultimate goal is love?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

In today’s gospel reading, we have Jesus asserting his authority as Lord of the Sabbath and teaching that the LORD desires authentic acts of love over legalistic compliance.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

LORD, Almighty Father, You gave us the law of love. Write it upon our hearts and minds and allow it to inform our souls and whole being. Grant that we might learn from the teachings, life and death of your only-begotten Son for our salvation and choose loving You and one another well over appearances. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
