Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: July 26,2026

LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Matthew 13:44-52

“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great value, he goes and sells all he has and buys it.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea that collects fish of every king. When it is full, it is hauled ashore and the good is put into buckets. What is bad is thrown away. Thus, it will be at the end of the age when the angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.

“Do you understand all these things?” The disciples answered, “Yes.” And Jesus replied, “Then every scribe who has been taught of the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.”

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

Am I willing to make sacrifices in order to more fully possess faith and the love of the LORD?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

Today’s gospel reading recounts Jesus’ final parables on the Kingdom of heaven as recorded in Matthew.  In the hidden treasure and pearl, we are reminded of the value of our relationship with the LORD and the joy that relationship brings. In the net, we are reminded that we will be judged on our lives, decisions and actions. And finally, in the scribe, we hear Jesus calling us to integrate the old and the new.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

LORD, open my mind, heart and soul to the wonder of your love so that I might more fully comprehend the value of your loving power and presence in my life and my world. Grant that I will have the wisdom and strength to sacrifice the unnecessary for the essential. Be with me, LORD, for I cannot do this on my own. Amen.
