Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: July 31,2026

LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Matthew 13:54-58

Jesus came to his native town and taught the people in their synagogue. They were astonished and said, “Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty works? Is he not the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Are not his sisters all with us? How is it that this man has all this?” And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house.” And he did not work many mighty deeds there because of their unbelief.

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

Have I dismissed the Lord’s extraordinary power and presence in my life because of familiarity with ordinary people who are His instruments?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

Today’s gospel reading recounts the rejection of the people of Nazareth of Jesus’ wisdom and great works because they found it incredulous that one of such humble and ordinary origins should be so extraordinary.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

LORD, in awe I come to You today. Send the Spirit to open my eyes, to tenderize my heart, and to illuminate my mind so that I might more clearly recognize You and your power and presence in my moments, in my life, in my world, and in myself. Grant that I may take what You offer me with humble and loving gratitude, acknowledging You as the source of all goodness. Father, Son and Spirit, may my life bring You glory. Amen.

CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
