LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: Matthew 9:32-38
They brought a mute man possessed with a devil to Jesus. And when the devil was cast out, the man spoke, and the multitudes marveled saying, “Never have we seen such a thing in Israel.” But the Pharisees said, “He casts out devils through the power of devils.”
And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in the synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, healing every sickness and disease among the people. And when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them because they were weary and scattered as sheep having no shepherd.
And He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Pray to the master of the harvest that He will send forth laborers for his harvest.”
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
When Christ looks at me, what does He see? What does He feel?
What am I contributing to the harvest? How am I bringing Christ’s message of salvation to the world?
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
In today’s gospel reading we are reminded anew of Christ’s compassion, not just for the ill and possessed, but also for those without a shepherd. Jesus reminds us of the necessity for prayer in the face of our needs.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
Almighty Father, You sent your Son, to reveal your love for us through His teachings and His actions. Send your Spirit to open our minds and hearts and souls to Him, to His love, and to faith in Him as your beloved Son and our Savior. Grant that we may take up the mantle of laborers for the harvest. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
