Scripture Text: Matthew 5:13-16
Jesus said to his disciples:
"You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The gospel reading for today from Matthew immediately follows the Beatitudes in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Jesus identifies us as “salt” and “light.” Both have purpose: salt preserves meat and enhances flavor; light illuminates our world. Christ is telling us that it’s not all about us but rather what we can bring to others as disciples.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Am I capable of looking beyond what I want and what I get to what the LORD wants of me and what I can bring to others for love of and glory to the LORD?
Praying:
LORD, You created me and from the very beginning, my very beginning, You have loved me and willed for me a loving life with You, in You, and through You. You gifted me so that I might be an instrument in your divine will, your divine plan for our world. May your love shine through me lighting the way for others. May your love for me enhance the lives of those around me as it overflows. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
