Scripture Text: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Brothers and sisters: I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The second reading for today from Paul’s 1st Letter to the Corinthians recounts Jesus’ institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper with the Disciples. Paul reminds us that Jesus gave us His body and blood and asks us to remember Him through this sacrament – that we proclaim His death through His sacrifice until He comes again.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
What does the Eucharist mean to me? Do I see it as Jesus’ body and blood?
Praying:
LORD, You sent your only begotten Son to serve as our savior, to redeem us of our sins. We remember that on the night before His death, He took bread and wine, blessed it and broke it and gave it to the disciples. And He asked us to do offer this sacrifice often, to “Do this in memory of me.” Send your Spirit, LORD, to grace our gatherings, and to aid us in celebrating this sacrament of loving sacrifice for us, the gift of your beloved Son. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
