Thursday of the 4th Week of Easter
Scripture Text: John 13:16-20
When Jesus had washed the disciples' feet, he said to them: "Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it. I am not speaking of all of you. I know those whom I have chosen. But so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, The one who ate my food has raised his heel against me. From now on I am telling you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I AM. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The gospel text for today is drawn from John’s account of Jesus’ “Final Discourse” with the disciples on the night before His crucifixion. He reminds the disciples that they are to be both messengers and servants in His name, going where He sends us.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I seek to be Christ’s servant and messenger daily? What message am I bringing to others of Christ in my words and actions?
Praying:
LORD, Jesus Christ, Son of God, my Savior, You call me to be your servant and your messenger, to bring the good news of salvation won through your sacrifice for love of us and love of the Father. Send your Spirit to guide me daily so that I might pick up the mantle of servant and bring the good news of your salvific mission to others through my words and actions. Grant that I may serve as your disciple and as a witness to your great love and to the redemption won by You on Calvary. Hear my prayer, Lord. Amen.
