Friday of the 4th Week of Easter
Scripture Text: John 14:1-6
Jesus said to his disciples: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way." Thomas said to him, "Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The gospel reading for today recounts Jesus’ “final discourse” with His disciples and His promise to “prepare a place” for them. It is in this part of his final conversation with His disciples that He reveals to them that He is “the way and the truth and the life.”
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I recognize Jesus as “the way and the truth and the life”? Do I acknowledge that without Him, I cannot become the one I was created to be? Do I acknowledge that without Him there is no life?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your beloved and only-begotten Son to us as our brother, assuming our human nature in every way except sin, to reveal “the way and the truth and the life” to us. He shows us “the way” through His teachings and example, but even more than that, He is “the way” to You and to life in abundance with You. He is “the truth” – the expression of You, the Word made flesh. Send your Spirit to open us fully to your Son, to His love, and to His saving action for us. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
