Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: May 26, 2024

Date: 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity   

Scripture Text:  Matthew 28:16-20

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they all saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

 The gospel for this Sunday recounts Jesus’ final words/commission to the disciples before His ascension according to the evangelist Matthew. Jesus commands us to be on mission until all the nations of the world have been evangelized and all believe in the Father, Son, and Spirit. We are to baptize in the name of the Trinity. We are to teach all the law of love as taught and lived by Christ himself, namely, to love the LORD with all our being and to love one another as Christ has loved us. Finally, we are remain in/belong to Christ as He remains with us.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

How well am I engaging always and everywhere in the mission Christ gave to us all as His followers?  

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your beloved and only-begotten Son, Jesus, to dwell among us as our brother, to teach us through word and deed what is required of us in this life so that we might share in life in abundance with You at the end of our journey. Through Jesus, we came to know of You as Father, as Abba. Through Jesus, we also learned of the Spirit, our Advocate, the Divine Sanctifier. Send you Spirit to enflame our hearts and minds daily with the love for You that enables us be lights to others as Christ commanded. Grant that we may never cease to bring the Good News to others. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
