Date: Tuesday of the 6th Week of Easter
Scripture Text: John 16:5-11
Jesus said to his disciples: "Now I am going to the one who sent me, and not one of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts. But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation: sin, because they do not believe in me; righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; condemnation, because the ruler of this world has been condemned."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
In today’s gospel text, Jesus presents the role of “the Advocate,” the Holy Spirit. Jesus promises that He will send the Spirit. Jesus presents three judgments of the Spirit: sin, righteousness, and condemnation. The sin Jesus speaks of refers to the sin of refusing to believe in Jesus as Son of God, Savior. The righteousness is Jesus Himself who though judged by others, condemned and crucified, is righteous and His righteousness is affirmed in His return to the Father. Finally, the condemnation is for Satan, “ruler of this world” who was defeated through Jesus’ selfless sacrifice upon the cross as expiation of our sins and who rose on the 3rd day.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Am I a true believer? To whom do I give witness? With whom do I share the Good News of Jesus Christ?
Praying:
LORD, we come to You this day, full of faith in your love and in your divine desires for us. We call out to You with hope, trusting in your promises. Our love for You stirs within us. We haven’t the words to adequately express our praise. We are in awe of You and your love for us. Who are we that You care so, that tend to us so, that You shepherd us? We believe in You, Father, Son, and Spirit. We believe in You, Creator, Redeemer, Advocate. Glory be to You. All praise and honor this day and all days. Amen.
