Scripture Text: Luke 17:7-10

Jesus said to the Apostles:

“Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here immediately and take your place at table’? Would he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished’? Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.’”

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

In the gospel text for today from Luke, Jesus reminds us that being servant to the LORD is a privilege, a reward unto itself. In doing what we have been commanded to do by Christ we find the reward – serving Christ who gave His life for us and our redemption.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I serve Christ willingly and joyfully?

Praying:

LORD, Jesus Christ, You gave us an example we cannot set down nor run away from. As we look upon the crucifix and take in with our eyes, our minds, and our hearts all that You gave so that we might live, we promise to pick up our own crosses and follow You. Send your Spirit to strengthen our resolve and increase our love. Christ, be with us as You promised: “Remain in me as I remain in You.” Amen.
