Scripture Text: Luke 17:7-10

Jesus said to the Apostles: "Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, 'Come here immediately and take your place at table'? Would he not rather say to him, 'Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished'? Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.'"

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The gospel text for today may be challenging to us in the modern world, but it made sense to the disciples and those who followed Jesus and gathered to hear his teaching. Jesus is telling us that serving the LORD and even one another for the glory of the LORD is a privilege. It is the right thing to do. As disciples of Christ, we are called to use our time and talents in loving service without a sense of entitlement or the need for earthly rewards or privileges.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I recognize Jesus’ call and respond by sharing what I have selflessly and without expectations of rewards from others? Am I content to wait for my reward of life in the LORD promised to those who follow Christ faithfully?

Praying:

LORD, Jesus Christ, You call to us to follow You because You are “the way, and the truth, and the life.” We look to You, your teachings and example, and see in You the selfless giving and service, even unto death on a cross. Send your Spirit to strengthen our resolve, to solidify our faith, to increase our hope, and to exponentially multiply our love so that we might follow in your footsteps, serving You and the Father through our lives. Be with us, LORD, as you promised, until the end of the age. Amen.
