Date: 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Scripture Text: Malachi 3:19-20a

Lo, the day is coming, blazing like an oven, when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire, leaving them neither root nor branch, says the LORD of hosts. But for you who fear my name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The first reading for today from the minor prophet Malachi tells of the “day of the LORD” which is both the coming of Christ and the final judgment. The blaze consumes the wicked but purifies/refines the faithful and righteous.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

If the day of the LORD were today, would I be counted among those who fear the LORD’s name?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, Only-Begotten Son, Holy Spirit, strengthen our resolve to live the life You have given to us in faithfulness and righteousness, loving and serving You and striving to be the daughters and sons You created us to be, the disciples You call us to be, and your sacred temples here on earth. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
