Scripture Text: Luke 21:1-4
When Jesus looked up he saw some wealthy people putting their offerings into the treasury and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins. He said, "I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
In today’s gospel reading, we hear Jesus’ teaching on true generosity which flows from one’s willingness to sacrifice.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
How generous am I really? How willing am I to make sacrifices for the sake of love and justice?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your only-begotten Son to take our human nature in all ways except sin and You called Him demonstrate with His very life, not just his words, of the need to be willing to commit everything for love of You and others. Send the Spirit to tenderize our minds and hearts to make them more receptive to this transformative truth and love. Grant that we may grow generous in our sharing of our life, our time, our talents and our treasures. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
