Date: Thanksgiving

Scripture Text:  1 Corinthians 1:3-9

Brothers and sisters:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, that in him you were enriched in every way, with all discourse and all knowledge, as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you, so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

He will keep you firm to the end, irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

Today’s second reading is part of Paul’s greeting in in his letter to the Corinthians. He reminds us, the reader, of the LORD’s providence and power, manifestations of His loving presence to us most especially in the gift of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I recognize that I have been “called to fellowship with Jesus Christ” by the Father? How am I responding?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, this day as we celebrate Thanksgiving in our nation, we give thanks to You for the gift of your only-begotten Son for our redemption. We give thanks for being “called to fellowship with Jesus Christ.” We pray that You send the Spirit to help us utilize the spiritual gifts given to each of us for your glory and for love of You and one another. Grant that we may give testimony to your beloved Son, our Savior, through our words and through our lives. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
