Scripture Text:   1 John 4:7-10

Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love. In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only-begotten Son into the world so that we might have life through him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The first reading for today continues our reading of the 1st Letter of John. The evangelist entreats us to love one another because of who we are because of who God is. God is love and we, made in His image and likeness are to reflect that love, to be loving ourselves. John reminds us of the purity and depth of God’s love for us when he reminds us that God His only-begotten Son to us for the expiation of our sins so we might have life through Him.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

How intentional am I about living the LORD’s love out loud through my words and actions, loving Him and loving others?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, your gift of your only-begotten Son to us, to humanity, to the world, a full expression of yourself and of your love for our redemption tenderizes our hearts and makes us want to live our love for You and for Him and His sacrifice boldly in this world.  Send your Spirit to strengthen our resolve, to deepen our faith, to intensify our hope, and to increase our love. Grant that we may give witness to You and to Jesus Christ, our Savior, through our words and actions in His name. We ask this in His name, in the name of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
