Scripture Text: Luke 11:29-32
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation, and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here. At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.”
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s gospel reading from Luke recounts Jesus’ response to the doubts of those challenging Him and His authority when working miracles. Jesus’ rebuke of these doubters gives us cause today to question our own reception of Christ’s power and presence in our lives. Do we also demand “signs”? Were not His death for our sins and His resurrection for our life enough?
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I demand “signs” from the LORD? Is my belief in Christ conditional?
Praying:
LORD, Father, Son, Spirit, always and everywhere your love manifests itself in the world as your power and presence. We praise You for who You are: creator, redeemer, sanctifier. We thank You for our lives, our world, the goodness You created. We humbly and contritely seek your forgiveness for those times we have ignored your loving presence and your will for us. Grant that we may recognize You in our moments, that we may seek your will for us and our world, and that we might labor with joy for your glory and in service to You and our sisters and brothers. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
