Scripture Text: Psalm 19:8, 9, 10, 11
R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart. The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul; The decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart. The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The command of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eye; R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; The ordinances of the LORD are true, all of them just. R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart. They are more precious than gold, than a heap of purest gold; Sweeter also than syrup or honey from the comb. R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The responsorial psalm today reminds us of the perfection of the LORD’s law, the LORD’s will for us, the basis for our relationships with the LORD and with one another. The psalmist reminds us that as the LORD is trustworthy, so are the decrees of the LORD. The law of the LORD helps us to see into life and what matters.
Fear of the LORD or awe of the LORD are natural if we but stop to consider. The LORD created us and desires that we have life and have it in abundance. The Law of the LORD is our map to that destination, crafted in love, and only possible through love. The law of the LORD is precious, valuable, in that it helps us to choose moment to moment the LORD.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I consider the law of the LORD to be a hindrance, a burden, or a gift, allowing me always a choice?
Praying:
LORD, send your Spirit to illuminate my mind, to tenderize my heart, and to transform my soul so that I might embrace your law of love always and everywhere. Help me to understand the wisdom of your Law, the guidance it gives me. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen
