Scripture Text: Luke 10:38-42
Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me." The Lord said to her in reply, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s gospel is the familiar account of Jesus’ encounter with the sisters, Martha and Mary. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet while Martha cared for Jesus and the other guests. Martha complained to Jesus about her sister’s lack of assistance. Jesus’ response was that Mary had chosen to listen to Him and He would not take that from her.
However, we would be wrong to assume that Jesus was saying that action is never good or that Martha was inferior. In the gospel of John, when their brother, Lazarus, dies, it is Martha who goes out in faith to meet Jesus. It is Martha who acknowledges that Jesus is “the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.”
We need to seek Christ, listen to Christ, and act on our new understanding in faith.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I take the time I should to sit with Christ and truly listen?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, we lift our minds, hearts and souls to You in awe. We know we are only because of You, the great I AM. We thank You for our lives and for the gift of your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, so that we might have life and have it in abundance through Him. Send your Spirit to open our minds, to tenderize our hearts, so that we might seek Christ, “the Way and the Truth and the Life.” Grant that we may take time to sit with your beloved Son and allow Him to teach us, to lead us, to save us. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
