Scripture Text: Luke 8:16-18
Jesus said to the crowd:
"No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it under a bed; rather, he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light. Take care, then, how you hear. To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
In the gospel reading today, Jesus reminds us of the “light” we received at our Baptisms, the gift of “enlightenment.” He urges us to use that light to illuminate the way to Him for others and to illuminate our world with the light of His love flowing through our lives. He asks us to be generous with what we have been given and our light will not fade; however, if we are stingy with our light, we may find that it fades to nothing. Use it or lose it.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I hide the light Christ gifted me with or do I allow it to shine brightly?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, told us He is “the light of the world.” And at our baptism, He shares that light with us. Send your Spirit to empower us as bearers of that light in the world. Grant that through our lives, others my see the light, others’ lives may be illuminated through the love of your Son lived brightly through us. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
