Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: September 28, 2024

Date: Saturday of the 25th Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture Text:  Luke 9:43B-45

While they were all amazed at his every deed, Jesus said to his disciples, “Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.”  But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was hidden from them so that they should not understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

Today’s gospel text from Luke reminds us of Jesus’ awareness of what His salvific mission would entail, the suffering He would endure for our salvation. He spoke of His arrest, crucifixion and death to His disciples, but they were unable to understand because their idea of the Messiah involved human glory and power.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I know my mission in life? Have I prayerfully discerned it? Am I afraid of what it may cost me?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your only-begotten and beloved Son to dwell among us in human form, our brother, and to redeem us when we ourselves were unable to save ourselves. He gave His life upon the cross for our sins though He himself is sinless. We come before You, claiming You as our Father in Heaven and your beloved Son as our Savior. Send your Spirit to stir within us the sparks of your transformative love to illuminate your desire for us, to help us recognize our gifts and our purpose in this life, and to live out our lives as your daughters and sons and Jesus’ disciples. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and dwells with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
