LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Luke 6:6-11

And it came to pass on a sabbath that Jesus entered into the synagogue and taught. There was a man whose right hand was withered. The scribes and Pharisees watched him to see if he would heal on the sabbath so that they might make a case against him. But he knew their intentions and said to the man with the withered hand, “Rise and stand in our midst.” And he rose and stood before them. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you one thing: is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days or to do evil? To save life or to destroy it?” Then looking at them all, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored, whole as the other. And they were filled with anger and plotted with one another what they might do to Jesus.

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

Can I be to legalistic and judgmental? Do I work always to do good and preserve life?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

Today’s gospel reading recounts Jesus’ response to a need on the Sabbath. Jesus chose to do good and to save life rather than refuse to do good for fear of repercussions from his overly legalistic critics.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

LORD, give us the courage to choose loving goodness and compassion over other people’s opinion of us. Amen.

CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
