Farmer’s Market (06/06/2025)

This past Wednesday, a neighbor and I drove to our small city’s downtown commons park for the weekly farmer’s market. We were pleased to see the number and diversity of booths set up along the park’s center walkways. Venders offered a plethora of items including honey, jams and jellies, cheeses, meat, baked items, crocheted and knitted items, bird houses, kettle corn, cosmetics, fresh produce and fresh flowers. I managed to pick up a few items, a plastic bag full, in fact, but what I most enjoyed getting was a chance to encounter and interact with so many wonderful people.

I wasn’t the only one who was enjoying time with others. I noticed that the parks picnic tables that dotted the grounds were occupied with groups eating and chatting. Along the sidewalks, individuals were stopping and chatting with one another. I especially enjoyed listening to the vendors answering questions about their wares and crafts and foods. At one point I purposedly looked around as far as I could see, and do you know what I didn’t see? I didn’t see a single person on a smartphone. Honestly. People were instead interacting with one another. It was wonderful.

That night as I pondered my visit to the market, the images of the people mingling and enjoying both one another and the fruit of each other’s work, I had to smile. I think Jesus would enjoy our local Farmer’s Market. It brings people together for positive interaction. It allows individuals a place to showcase their crafts, the work of their hands, the fruits of their gardens. It gives individuals a chance to chat with others they may not have seen for a while. It builds a sense of community right there in the center of our small town.

This morning as I came in from the porch and my morning reflection and prayer, I passed by the beautiful bouquet I got at the market. I said a short “Thank you, LORD, for gracing us with so many wonderful gifts and the opportunity to share them with one another.”

As we continue our journeys of faith in our LORD, let us also continue to recognize the LORD’s presence and grace in our moments and activities. Let us strive to find real and meaningful ways to come together, to build community, to foster loving kindness and good will.
