Forget-Me-Nots (07/23/2026)

I have several “favorite” flowers that make me smile whenever I see them. One that was missing from our small garden just outside my prayer porch was forget-me-nots. I’d had them in our previous two yards, but they hadn’t made it to this one yet. I mentioned that to my husband about a month ago. And then one morning as I was taking in the flowers in the garden and savoring each sight, I saw them. He had planted forget-me-nots in the corner of the garden closest to the porch. He hadn’t forgotten. Can you guess how broadly I smiled or how long it lasted?

My husband, Kenneth, has a habit of doing things for me. Seriously, it is a habit I am so glad he has developed to the extent that he has. I mention something and then, before I know it, it materializes. I found out that he actually writes it down on a piece of paper he carries in his pocket, so he doesn’t forget. I always say that the LORD looks after fools and short Irish women, and being both, I am doubly blessed.

As I delighted in my forget-me-nots in the garden, I thought how wonderful the world would be if all of us on our journeys of faith, hope, and love were attentive to other’s needs, desires, favorites and if we sought to produce them when we can. These small loving kindnesses go a long way; they are small in cost or effort, but they are treasured beyond measure. In this age when there is so much stress in our world, how delightful it is when we turn a corner or turn around and spot an intentional kindness created just for us.

As we continue on our way, let us seek the help of the Spirit to enhance our sensitivity to others so that we might provide those meaningful gifts and gestures that say so loudly, “I remembered you and you matter.” Let us take advantage of the multiple opportunities that arise daily to do something kind for another on the way.
