God’s Math (09/21/2025)

This past week, I felt overwhelmed more than once. To say that my calendar was full would be an understatement of the same caliber as saying an opossum is not that attractive. One day in particular, as I was racing around, feeling very much alone on my errands, I was reminded very poignantly that God’s math is superior to mine.
I was in Kwik trip, trying to pick up some needed items. I should have grabbed a cart or at least a basket, but I didn’t. And I was scurrying to the checkout counter, I dropped an item. A kind young man, stopped, spoke to me, “Let me get that for you,” and then swooped down, retreated my item from the floor, and ever so gently returned it to the top of the heap in my arms. Then he said, “Please, you go ahead of me.” And suddenly the clerk was free and shouting, “Next.” He waved at me to go. And I did.
As the clerk was ringing up my purchases, I turned around to thank the young man who let me go ahead of him. He was nowhere to be seen. And I smiled to myself, but I suspect it was broad enough for others to notice. I wasn’t alone. God’s math is surely superior to mine.
In my car, I spoke out loud to the LORD and thanked him for my “helper” and for the kind reminder that I am never alone.
The LORD is with us always, most especially during those times when we feel most isolated. As we journey, let us be people who open ourselves to what is – to the LORD’s constant presence and power at work in our lives and our world. And let us open ourselves to the LORD’s tap in those moments when others need to know they are not alone.
Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
