“Good” Friday (04/03/2026)

When I was a child, “Good Friday” was good. I was too young to really understand anything about the day except that we had no school. That was good. That was great. By the time I was in middle school, I realized what we were remembering and couldn’t understand for the life of me why we called it “Good.” As a young adult, I finally realized that the “Good” was a reminder of the loving goodness of the LORD and His salvific plan for us. But to this day, I struggle with the “Good” today.
Christians say that while the day is one of extreme sorrow as we contemplate Christ’s crucifixion and death, we acknowledge the “good” in His sacrifice, the “good” in love that would allow Him to undergo such suffering for others. Ultimately, it will be a victory but today doesn’t feel victorious.
On Good Friday now a days, I take time to sit and meditate upon the crucifix. I consider Christ’s loving sacrifice. I consider how grateful I’ve acted on all the other days of the year. I consider His gift to me. I consider what I am being called to do with goodness. I expect to do the same things later today.
As we near the end of our journey to Easter, let us take time today to truly consider the price our Redeemer paid for love of the Father and love of us. And may the goodness of that gift permeate our minds and hearts and wills this day.
Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
