Hold That Thought (9/24/2023)

I long for the goodness of people to be dominant in our world. But I’m old enough to realize that just wanting something doesn’t make it so. However, I am not going to put that thought down and give up. I’m Irish, you know, which is code for stubborn or persevering, depending upon who is making the judgment. And so, daily I ask the Spirit to help me, to guide me, to allow me to be a leaven in our world. And daily, I promise the LORD I will “hold that thought” and not let the struggle get me down.

I believe that most of us want the same thing. I believe that at the depths of our souls we all desire goodness and loving kindness to be the primary currency of daily exchanges and encounters. I believe we all long for a world of light and love. Thing is, it can be, but we must be leaven.

I think back to my younger years and my concern over the treatment of others. My father told me that I had a choice. Either I worked to make the changes I longed to see, or my lack of work made me complicit in the wrongdoing.

Today is a good day for us all, disciples of Christ, to do whatever we can to counter the darkness, to bring the light of our LORD into the moment through our actions, through our words, through our prayers. We all know that the world in which we live is in desperate need of Christ. Let us hold that thought. Let love fuel our lives as we seek to bring Christ to others and others to Christ.

As we begin this week, let us do as our Savior told us: deny ourselves and take up our crosses and follow Christ. Let us hold the thought of our Savior’s promise: “I came into this world so that they might have life and have it in abundance.” Let us hold that thought as we go about our day and may it guide us in our words and actions.

Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
