This morning on my way into the kitchen from the porch where I was waking up with the LORD, I did what I do every day, I opened the kitchen blinds and mumbled, “Let in the light.” I do it joyfully, not only opening my home to the LORD’s gift of sunlight but also consciously opening myself, body, mind and heart to the LORD’s illuminating love.
Often, when I do this, I remember the words of a wise woman when we were talking about having dark times in our lives. It was a simple statement. She looked at me and suggested that I simply “Let in the light.” She could tell by reaction, I believe, that I’d not thought of that obvious approach. So, she asked me, “Do you realize that sometimes it’s not a case of there being no light but a case of us closing the blinds?”
She probably never realized how she changed my life. Because of her wisdom given lovingly and with faith, I came to acknowledge my role in the “light” in my life. I learned to be more intentional about seeking it. I also learned to imitate more closely the sunflower, intentionally orienting myself to the light, especially the light of Christ. I came to understand that there can be a spiritual equivalent to the physical Seasonal Affective Disorder.
As disciples of Christ, we are called daily to orient ourselves to Christ, “the light of the world.” We can do this through reading scripture, through heartfelt and open prayer, through meditation and contemplation. We can do this by opening ourselves to others who carry Christ’s love and light with them.
If we think about the most joyful people in our lives, I bet we see in them an openness. They have not shuttered themselves away from the light. May this day be a day of light in all our lives where we not only open ourselves to Christ’s light but welcome that light and savor it. If we can, we will note growth, spiritual growth, an increase in our ability to see Christ around us and in us.
Until tomorrow, let us all love well.

AMEN
