Little Things Add Up (04/14/2025)

I asked if I could lead a series of bible studies on the parables. My friend decided to come and she asked another friend to join her. That friend loves flowers and decided she wanted to share the seeds she’d collected with others as a reminder of the seeds in the parables we studied. I took some of those seeds to my husband who does the gardening, and he planted them in a pot to start them so they were ready for planting in the garden by Mother’s Day. Don’t you just love the way that little things can add up?

While many if not most of us, because of our human natures, would love to accomplish “great things,” few of us will make the books as the discoverer of a continent or the first to step foot on Mars. But we have the ability through the gifts and graces of our all-loving and ever-present LORD to do small things always. And small things add up, they make a difference, a real difference in the lives of others and in our own lives. Small kindnesses performed for another not only make a difference in the life of the other, it brings us closer to being the ones the LORD created us to be, to being the followers Christ calls us to be, to being the instruments of the Spirit in the moment.

I’m just a retired, short Irish woman in a small city in the Midwest. And yet I believe to my core in the potential the LORD has sewn in my being to be an instrument of His will, His love in this world. And I believe that same potential is sewn within each of us at our creation. I have seen it materialize in my days. Just yesterday I benefitted from it when another who hadn’t seen me in a while spoke to me and her joy made me feel loved. I benefitted from it when friends asked me to share a meal with them. I benefitted from it when a young man shared his faith with me and allowed me to share mine. I have seen that potential realized in the kindnesses expressed through hours of service, through donations offered not from surplus but from love. And I have seen the difference these “little things” make along the way.

During this season of spring, this season of believing in the power and love of the LORD, let us believe in our own calling to be instruments of the LORD’s power and love in the world. Let us open ourselves to the potential sewn within us as the soil opens itself to the seeds. Let us believe.

Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
