Love that Binds Us Together (10/8/2024)

Mondays are Scripture Study in my world. Usually, nine other women join me for a simple supper and conversation followed by the opening of the Word, faith sharing, and prayer. Last night we began a larger scripture study on the Letter to the Ephesians at our parish. There were 23 of us. Because of our number, we settled for “snack” rather than a full meal. But there was no settling when it came time to break open the Word and share our faith and gifts. I stood and watched and listened. The LORD is good!

As I watched and listened to the individuals at the tables discuss the texts, each contributing and bringing unity and cohesion to the wonder of the LORD at work for us, in us, with us, and through us, I must admit my own sense of awe at the power and presence of the LORD grew. And I was reminded of a passage in this same book, “From Him, the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work” (Eph 4:16).

The Father wills that we be one, that we be united for and in love of the LORD. Through Christ, we are called to be active disciples and apostles, proclaiming the good news but also living it – living Christ – bringing Christ to others and others to Christ. And in the Spirit, we are given the grace and gifts to bring this unity into being.  It was happening last night at scripture study.

It happens with great frequency as I recall the myriad of times I’ve seen communities come together in faith, hope and love, at liturgies, at parish festivals, in times of need for individuals as well as for whole communities.  And I find myself praying that it will happen even more frequently and that it will involve even more of us.  How I pray that we will see the needs the LORD puts before us and respond with love, with mercy, with grace, with our gifts.

As we continue on our journeys of faith in the one LORD, buoyed by the hope of the LORD’s promise, and fueled by love, let us seek the will of the Father in the moment and for us. Let us open ourselves to Christ’s redeeming love. And let us cooperate with the graces and gifts the Spirit fills us with that are meant to be used and shared in service to one another and for love of our God.  Let us open ourselves fully to the love that binds us together.  And let us insist on doing our part, on bringing the gifts we’ve been given for the good of all.

Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
