Meeting Again (9/7/2023)

A wonderful thing often happens on our journeys; paths separate, companions and friends are called in different directions, and then, paths cross again. The reunion is a blessing. That happened to me this week when a friend from years ago reconnected through a message, then we talked on the phone, and yesterday we met for coffee. I found myself thanking the LORD for this opportunity as I sat in the coffee shop window waiting for my friend. Moments like this are like going home moments, full of familiarity but also of new wonders.
We had a visit complete with welcoming and parting hugs, memories as well as updates shared, and through it all, the recognition that the LORD had been with us all the way. We made plans to continue our meetings, promising support and prayers to one another for our particular paths at this time. And last evening, as I recollected my day, thanked the LORD for blessings received, I also remembered to pray for my companion on the way.
Truly we are not meant to walk this path alone. Let us take time to really look about us and make note of those who share the journey with us now. Are we companions on the journey or disconnected fellow travelers, much like the passengers on a plane, heading to the same destination but not really sharing the journey? What have the others the LORD has put on the path with us got that we may need? What do we possess that others may need? How are we “to companion” one another? What does that really involve?
I believe it begins with recognizing the other and opening ourselves to the other. I suspect that because I witnessed Jesus doing that on His journey among us. I believe it means doing what we can for others out of love for them as well as for our LORD. Afterall, that was part of his farewell address to the disciples: “Love one another as I have loved you.” And I believe it means sharing our faith with one another and finding that in doing so, it multiples for each of us.
May this day on our journeys be filled with the goodness that flows from companionships. May we open our minds and hearts to the Spirit and the Spirit’s guidance. May we recognize that the greatest gifts we receive this day may come to us in tennis shoes or SUVs.
Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
