Most Monday evenings, you will find my home full of women sharing their faith as we break open the Word. But before we begin our bible study, we gather for a meal, for the breaking of bread together, sharing our lives and our faith. And it is a standing tradition that one of the women gets into my cupboards and retrieves the saltshaker and places it on the table. “Pass the salt” is a thing.
I was thinking about that as I replaced the saltshaker in my kitchen cupboard. When we women gather, we not only pass the visible, food seasoning salt, we also pass the salt of our faith and lives, sharing it with one another. And I thought of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:13 where He tells us we are the “salt of the earth.” As such, we are called and gifted to “flavor” the world with our faith, with our hope, with our love. We are called and gifted to bring about good, to be instruments of “preserving” the goodness of the LORD invested in each and every one of us.
I feel blessed to have the opportunity weekly to sit with others who are also “on the Way.” To hear of their travels, their struggles, their stories of faith lived and of blessing received. It is one of the best uses of my time each week because I know that without prayer and without intentionally seeking to follow the LORD, I will lose my way, I will lose “my taste.” Jesus warns us that “salt” can lose taste – lose our ability to be and do that which we are created to be and do.
As we begin another week in our lives and our journeys, let us commit ourselves wholly and sincerely to being all we are created to be and to doing all we are called to do. Let us take to heart our calling by our LORD to be “salt of the earth.” And let’s celebrate – Pass the Salt, please.
Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
