Tonight is our annual free community soup supper at our church. The women put it together, serve it and clean up. And it’s one of my favorite days of the year because I believe we can all use a bit more “community”.
I love the preparations routine and getting to know the members of our faith community better. Our conversations are always interesting and frequently inspirational. But even if all they do is help us know one another better, that is a holy endeavor, coming to “see” the other more fully. I love the serving time when the people come through the line and chat and smile and say “thank you” multiple times. It tells me every time just how good people are. And then there’s the clean-up part that truly amazes me because we have the people that signed up to help and then there are the “volunteers” that just materialize because they see a need.
We do the soup supper, we say, to serve our community, but it does so much more than that. I helps us form and strengthen community and relationships. There’s nothing like working together for a common goal to forge and strengthen relationships.
Christ calls us to do just that, labor together in the vineyard for a common purpose. Imagine what the world could be like if we all showed up, wanting to work together for love of the LORD and to build the kingdom. Just saying!
If you’re in Lake Mill, Wisconsin today between 5:30 and 7, come join us. We will have six home-made soups (beef vegetable soup with barley, chicken noodle, broccoli cheese, chicken tortilla, butternut squash, and chili). We will also be serving homemade breads and desserts. If you’re nowhere near but interested, pray for us. We’d love to see you. We’d appreciate the prayers.
Gotta go. My shift starts early.
Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
