The Interview (03/13/2024)

Last evening, I had the privilege of interviewing confirmation candidates. They came a bit nervous. I assured them immediately that it wasn’t a test but rather an opportunity for them to share how the formation process had helped them and to ask about their hopes and plans for living their faith after confirmation. I found myself wondering how we all might benefit from such an interview about our faith formation to date and how we will live our faith forward.

Last night I also thought about our expectations of the candidates – their attendance and service hours. I wondered how our world would be different if we all were looking for ways to share our time and talents. And how would our world be different if we confirmed adults were more conscious of “showing up” for moments of faith shared with others in our community – for liturgies, for adult formation offerings, for scripture study, for adoration.

As I pondered this last evening, I admitted to the LORD that I could do better myself. I am grateful no one has been keeping a record of my attendance. While I’m usually in a pew when I should be, I must admit that I often pass on additional opportunities. I do wish I were a bit more open to the possibilities of where the Spirit could take me if I simply showed up with an open mind and heart. I prayed about that.

And then last evening, I dreamt about my interview – not my confirmation interview but my interview with the LORD when He asked me the question “How do I know you?”

How would you answer that question today if the LORD asked it of you?

I know that I for one am looking forward to accepting every day’s opportunities to “show up.” I realize now how much I want to be able to share with the LORD about our time together here on my journey.

Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
