Today, across the United States, we pause to remember those who gave their lives in service to our country and even to the world to win our freedom or to protect us from threats to our freedom. These men and women gave their very selves for our freedom.
Â
Freedom is more precious and sacred than many realize though those who fail to realize are usually the ones that push upon the boundaries the most. We know the LORD created us free – He gave us a free will – we choose. And throughout our history, humanity has chosen poorly frequently, and yet the LORD’s will for us has not changed. We saw it in the Exodus when the LORD wrought amazing wonders to free His people. We saw it when the LORD turned the hearts of conquerors and oppressors, and the people of Israel were released and allowed to return to Israel and rebuild the temple. And our world was forever changed when the LORD sent His only begotten Son to conquer sin and death when we ourselves could not. Yes, there is no need to wonder. The LORD has always wanted us to be free.
Â
And in this nation of the United States of America, founded on the premise that we are created by the LORD with unalienable rights including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, has a history of recognizing the LORD’s Spirit at work in our midst. Today, as communities across the nation gather for speeches and parades and ceremonies and as individuals make their way to a particular marker in a particular place, we recognize that this journey of ours is Spirit led, and the LORD is with us. And we hope and pray that those brave souls who gave their lives for our life are with the LORD, that their fight for our freedom and for peace has been rewarded with peace and joy.
Â
Let us use this day to honor those women and men who over the centuries have given the ultimate gift, who have followed Jesus’ example of giving their lives so that others may live. Let us lift our voices in a prayer in their name and in thanksgiving for their sacrifice. And let us beg of the LORD help always in preserving the freedoms He gave to us so that we might lovingly, intentionally, and freely choose Him and life with Him, in Him, and through Him.
Â
Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
