LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: John 6:1b-15
Jesus went over the sea of Galilee which is the sea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed Him because they had seen his miracles healing their sick. And Jesus went up a mountain and sat down with his disciples. The Passover, a feast of the Jews was near.
When Jesus lifted up his eyes and saw a great crowd that had come to Him, He said to Philip, ‘Where can we buy bread that these people may eat?” He said this to test him because He knew what He would do.
Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii of bread is not sufficient to feed everyone of them even a little.”
One of the disciples, Andrew, brother of Simon Peter, said to Him, “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what good are they for so many?”
Jesus said, “Make them sit down.” Now there was grass in this place, so all sat down, numbering about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves and when He had given thanks, He distributed them to the disciples who shared them with those seated and He did likewise with the fish.
When they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain so nothing is lost.” They gathered together and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves that remained after they had eaten. And those there, when they recognized Jesus’ miracle said, “This is truly the prophet that is to come into the world.”
When Jesus realized that they wanted to come and take Him away to make Him king, he left and returned to the mountain alone.
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
Jesus took – gave thanks – shared = abundance
BREAKING OPEN TEXT: Jesus’ miracle of feeding the multitude foreshadows both His institution of the Eucharist, the gift of His one body to feed humanity (multitude) and His crucifixion and resurrection, the death of an innocent to gain life and salvation for all. It reveals the divine abundance possible from authentic love.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
Loving and Almighty Father, we come to You this day full of praise for all You are and thanksgiving for the gift of your only-begotten Son for our salvation. In awe we recognize the gift of one, your only-begotten so, for the life of all, to atone for our sins, when we ourselves were unable and unwilling to turn and return to You. Send your Spirit to guide us and grace us as we seek to live as He, your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, calls us to live. May His loving example guide us so that we may recognize the needs of our sisters and brothers and offer what You have given to us with thanksgiving for your gift and with love for You and them. Grant that we may not give into the negative sense of insufficiency of our ability to bring Christ to others and others to Christ. May our lives reflect the divine abundance of possibilities when we love as You call us to love. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
