Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: August 19,2026

LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Matthew 20:1-16

(Jesus told his disciples a parable) “The Kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who at dawn went out to hire workers for his vineyard. When he had agreed with the workers for a denarius a day, he sent them out into his vineyard.

And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idly in the marketplace. He said to them, ‘Go into the vineyard also, and whatsoever is right, I will give you.’ And they went off. Again, he went out about the sixth and ninth hour and did likewise.

And at the eleventh hour, he went out and found others standing idly and asked them, ‘Why do you stand here all day idle?’ They answered him, ‘Because no one has hired us,’ He said to them, ‘Go also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is just, you shall receive.’

When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the workers and give them their wage beginning with the last to the first.’ And when those who were hired in the eleventh hour came, they received a denarius. But when the first to be hired came, they supposed that they should receive more, but they likewise received to the man a denarius. And when they received it, they grumbled against the owner saying, ‘These last workers have given only one hour and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and heat of the day.’

He answered them saying, ‘Friend, I do you no wrong. Did you not agree with me to work for a denarius? Take what is yours and go. I will give to the last just as to you. Is it unlawful for me to do what I will with what is mine? Are you envious because I am good?’

So, the last shall be first and the first shall be last; many are called, but few are chosen.

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

Am I envious of others’ blessings? Do I lose sight of how blessed I am because of useless comparisons?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

In today’s gospel, Jesus teaches us to step away from comparison and rather focus on the goodness, grace and blessings we ourselves have received. Jesus teaches us to reject envy and focus instead on the LORD’s radical generosity. Afterall, salvation is a gift none of us has earned.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

Gracious and loving LORD, You call to me daily, You come to me where I am and because of You, my life has purpose. Send your Spirit to remind me of the abundance of your loving gifts and graces and most especially, your mercy. Squash my pride and conform my mind and heart to your will and implant in me a desire to live by your grace rather than my own sense of self-reliance. Amen.
