Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s gospel text recounts the death of John the Baptist at the hands of King Herod. The Alleluia acclamation before the gospel highlights for us the value of the text and the call of Christ embedded in it. We are called to stand for righteousness even if it means persecution.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
How committed am I truly to the Way of Christ? Does fear cause me to step away from the path?
Praying:
LORD, I crave your loving presence in my life and pray that I may live that loving presence in all places and moments, everywhere and always. Send your Spirit to strengthen my resolve. Amen.
