Scripture Text: Matthew 17:9a, 10-13
As they were coming down from the mountain, the disciples asked Jesus, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" He said in reply, "Elijah will indeed come and restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased. So also, will the Son of Man suffer at their hands." Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
In today’s gospel reading Jesus answers the disciples question concerning the claim that Elijah would come again to announce the coming of the Messiah. Jesus’ words foretell His own suffering to come.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Am I focused on Jesus during this Advent season of preparation and anticipation?
Praying:
LORD, Open my mind and heart fully to You as I wait in anticipation for the celebration of your coming to us as Son of God born of woman but also as our brother. Send your Spirit to help me to see my sisters and brothers and their needs. Grant that as I anticipate your coming, I appreciate the blessings I already have – family, friends, community. O, Come, Emanuel. Amen.
