Date: Feast of St. John the Apostle
Scripture Text: 1 John 1:1-4
Beloved: What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we looked upon and touched with our hands concerns the Word of life — for the life was made visible; we have seen it and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was made visible to us—what we have seen and heard we proclaim now to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; for our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing this so that our joy may be complete.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The first reading for today’s feast is from the 1st Letter of John, a catholic letter, addressed to all Christians rather than a specific community. And John begins by giving witness to Christ and inviting the readers to join with him and other believers in fellowship with Father and the Son “so our joy may be complete.” Like John, we are all called to give witness to Christ through our words and through our lives and to invite others to this “fellowship.”
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
How well am I inviting others to fellowship with our LORD through my witness?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, Beloved Son, Most Holy Spirit, your being fills us, our minds, our hearts, our souls to overflowing. Grant that we may be your instruments in this world, bringing You and your love to others through our witness, through our words, through our joy, through our loving actions. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
