Scripture Text:   Matthew 5:20-26

Jesus said to his disciples: "I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.

"You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, Raqa, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, 'You fool,' will be liable to fiery Gehenna. Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.  Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court. Otherwise, your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny."

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The gospel reading for today features Jesus’ teaching concerning our relationships with one another from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Jesus’ teaching underscores the necessity of right relationship with one another based on loving compassion and mercy, the same loving compassion and mercy we seek in our relationship with our LORD. Jesus calls us to true transformation through love rather than mere legalistic compliance. Jesus calls us to move beyond simply “not killing” to truly loving.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I give into anger rather than seeking reconciliation? How much energy am I spending daily on loving well.

Praying:

LORD,  Almighty Father, Beloved Son, Most Holy Spirit, stir within me and increase my ability to love. You are the source of all goodness and love itself. Help me to allow your love for me to transform me and make me a more loving being capable of loving You with all my might and strength and self and loving others as You love me. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
