Scripture Text: Mark 6:30-34
The Apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them.
When Jesus disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s gospel text recounts Jesus’ ministering to the multitudes and the lack of time and space for rest. Jesus was moved by seeing so many in such need, and He stepped up and shepherded them.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Am I among the multitudes who come to Jesus with all my needs?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your beloved and only-begotten Son to us to reveal your great love for us and to model for us and to us the potential within humanity as You created us to be. Send your Spirit to move among us and move within us so that we might fully open ourselves to the teachings of your Son, His parables, His sermons, and most especially His example. Grant that we may be willing to pick up our crosses and follow Him. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
